Penelope Gordon grew up in a village between Leeds and Bradford, West Yorkshire, and has a background in performing arts. Half Brazilian and half English, her work is informed by existing between two cultures — observing both while never feeling entirely at home in either. This tension fuels her interest in outsiderism, identity and loneliness. Her artistic influences include Nan Goldin, Quilla Constance, Juno Calypso and Marlene Dumas.
